Symptoms That Point to Register Rather Than Ink Issues
Register problems on film show as gradual color shift along the web direction, lateral walk of process color, or bar codes that drift out of specification while solid ink density stays acceptable. Document whether error appears after acceleration, after a splice, or only on the outer edges of wide webs. Verify dancer arm or tension sensor calibration, then check that infeed and outfeed rollers are clean and parallel. A sleeve or plate mounted off-center produces register error that repeats every cylinder revolution with a fixed phase relationship to the mark. Register often deteriorates during speed ramps because ink transfer and web tension lag behind drive commands. Program gentler acceleration on delicate film grades and verify drier heat does not shrink the web during the ramp.
